How to fill out AIA G702 and G703
By DrawPrep editorial · Updated · 8 min read
A line-by-line walkthrough of the G702 summary and G703 continuation sheet, with a worked example showing how the numbers tie together.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Fill out the G703 continuation sheet first; the G702 totals come from it.
- Each G703 line shows scheduled value, previous work, this period, stored materials, total to date, percent complete, balance to finish and retainage.
- G702 line 4 equals G703 column G total; current payment due is total earned less retainage minus previous certificates.
- Reconcile the contract sum, change orders and previous payments before you submit.
How do you fill out G702 and G703?
Complete the G703 continuation sheet first, line by line, then carry its totals to the G702 summary. The G703 holds the detail; the G702 holds the math that turns it into a payment request.

Frequently asked questions
- Which do you fill out first, G702 or G703?
- Start with the G703 continuation sheet. Its column totals feed the G702 summary, so completing the detail first keeps the two sheets consistent.
- What goes in column F on the G703?
- Column F is materials presently stored that are not already included in columns D or E. Stored materials are billable only if your contract allows it, often with backup such as invoices or proof of insurance.
- How do you calculate current payment due on G702?
- Take total earned less retainage (line 6) and subtract previous certificates for payment (line 7). The result is the current payment due (line 8).
- What is balance to finish?
- Balance to finish is the scheduled value minus total completed and stored to date (column H on the G703). Line 9 of the G702 also adds retainage back to show the full remaining amount.
- Can I fill out G702 and G703 in Excel?
- Many subcontractors do, but formulas, prior-period carry-forward and change orders are common error points. Billing software automates those carry-forwards and checks.
